DIGITAL SCULPTURE / 3d PRINT /

16.04_

Experience of creating sculpture digitally is quite different from any physical interaction with the material.  Being in the virtual world of the 3d software presents the artist with endless possibilities where there are no material limitations.  Innovation through information modeling is exciting.  Additive process of the 3d printing manufacturing provocative because things are literally made out dust (powder); material used in the process is called nylon, or polyamid, it is, philosophically speaking, mesmerizing, and every time I think or discuss this with other artists or collectors, it brings a smile to my face and theirs.  It is still a very experimental field.

I use Shapeways.com for all my 3d printing.

Drawing is my medium of choice and I regard digitally generated sculpture to be in the same realm as the hand drawing.  Philosophically they are both drawings and done by hand where one is immediate, the other - is facilitated through the intermediary medium of the digital modeling software.  Technically they are both powder based.  Historically I am bringing them closer together every time I make more work and explore their relationship.

I work in various media, but I have my favorites: dry pastel & 3-d print.  Digital represents unlimited possibilities.  Conceptually and physically there are some similarities between 3-d print and dry pastel.  The main similarities are the most fundamental – they are both powder based; they are both media for drawing.  3-d printing machine lets powder in infinitesimally small layers of powder dust.  Even though the process is mechanic, it is not very far from leaving pastel powder marks on paper.  To generate a 3d print I first create a model in a 3d software, it is also drawing, yet drawing in 3d.  This first layer of drawing before it becomes a physical object is like my pencil drawing before it becomes pastel.
The concept of drawing in my work is an entanglement.   It weaves itself through all the aforementioned media: from a completely erased pencil drawing to a limited color palette pastel, to a 3d model, to a 3d print.  Sometimes pastels come first and the 3d print follows, sometimes the object is first and the drawing follows.  Every step of the process informs the other.  I work back and forth bouncing ideas of the classical media with the more technologically innovative processes.
